Last week marked something really special for us. Although our Artistic Director took part in Jonzi D and Breakin' Conventions' Open Art Surgery back in 2013, there was something about this time around which made it all the more poignant.
It might have been that this is the first time that the development lab for Hip Hop Theatre artists has come to Wales, where The Artifact is now based.
It might have been that it took place in the South Wales valleys, where Hip Hop's messages of resilience and healing through art can be especially powerful. We do know that a huge part of this feeling comes from the dedication of those involved. Thank you to the incredible Rachel Pedley from Avant Cymru for her commitment to the cause, and to mentors Jonzi D and Ivan Blackstock who worked with us ceaselessly to create the beginning nuggets of a new work "HERSTORY".
This is just the beginning of our adventure with "HERSTORY". The aim is to develop a full-length piece of Hip Hop dance theatre which explores female journeys through and beyond gender violence, via dance and spoken word. Here's a very rough rehearsal image, taken by fellow Hip Hop dancer Jamie Berry. Footage and final performance photos to come soon.
