Conferences

Our Artistic Director, Gemma Connell, is available as a speaker at conferences across the globe. In her talks, Gemma provides advice, provocations and shares research into dance, spoken word, Hip Hop and wellbeing. She has spoken at the National Convention of Youth Drama (Scotland), at training events for recipients of the Weston Jerwood Creative Bursaries and at dance conferences at The University of East London and Pavilion Dance South West, among others. See the videos and audio below for examples.

In addition to her experiences as Artistic Director of The Artifact, Gemma has a wealth of experience to draw from in her presentations. She holds a BA (Hons) in English Literature from the University of Warwick and an MFA (Distinction) in Art, Society and Publics from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at The University of Dundee. She is currently a PhD candidate at The University of Surrey, researching semi-autobiographical representations of gender violence in British Hip Hop dance theatre. She has extensive experience in youth dance and education, particularly working with young people with Additional Support Needs.
