Dance and spoken word workshops

Photo by Andy Catlin (Youth Theatre Arts Scotland)

Using our techniques in creating dance and spoken word, these workshops enable young performers or community groups to begin creating their own artistic work using words and movement. Delivered by our Artistic Director, Gemma Connell, they take participants through The Artifact's choreographic process, and allow them to try it out for themselves.

There are a number of levels at which these workshops are pitched. Please see below for information, and contact Gemma Connell (gconnellarts@gmail.com) to book.

Taster Workshops

Lasting 1.5 hours, these workshops give an introduction into the relationship between dance and spoken word, inviting participants to write their own short pieces of spoken word, and learn techniques for performing it, before creating movement to match those words.

Experience Workshops

These half day workshops aim to go deeper into our work with dance and words. We delve into more improvisatory tasks, challenging our participants to create words in the moment. We also have a look into how this has influenced The Artifact's choreographic practice - taking small sections of spoken word and beginning to set movement to it.

Choreography Workshops

Lasting between 1 day and a full weekend experience, these workshops take participants through all of the above, whilst also working with them to choreograph a new piece of dance theatre based on the spoken word and improvised movement they have created through earlier tasks.

"It's fun to detach from your head."

"We developed as the workshop developed."

"This workshop has provoked some rhythmic, lyrical thing in me."
